RUT deduction explained for expat families

RUT-avdrag is a Swedish tax break that covers 50% of household service costs, including childcare. If you pay income tax in Sweden, you're eligible. The deduction is applied directly on your invoice, so you never pay the full price upfront.

Before RUT

398 SEK/hr

After RUT

199 SEK/hr

Each person can deduct up to 75,000 SEK per year. For a couple, that's 150,000 SEK combined. We handle the paperwork with Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) so you don't have to.

How nanny costs compare to dagis

Swedish preschool (förskola, often called dagis) costs about 1,500 SEK per month for the first child. It covers weekday mornings, typically 8:00 to 16:00. A nanny covers the hours dagis doesn't: early mornings, evenings, weekends, and school holidays.

Most families use both. Dagis handles daytime structure while a nanny fills the gaps around work schedules. After RUT deduction, one evening per week with a nanny typically costs between 800 and 1,200 SEK per month.
